How can diabetes affect the eyes?

High blood glucose over time can damage small blood vessels in the retina. This is called diabetic retinopathy and can affect sight if the changes progress.

Why screening matters

Early diabetic retinal changes may not cause blurred vision. Screening can identify changes before symptoms are noticed, allowing the ophthalmologist to discuss monitoring or treatment.

What happens during a retina examination?

Your clinician may dilate the pupils to examine the retina and may recommend photographs or scans if required. Tests depend on your findings and clinical history.

Protecting long-term vision

Follow your diabetes care plan, attend eye reviews on the schedule recommended for you and seek prompt advice for new changes in vision. A normal-feeling eye is not a reason to skip screening.
